5-DAY LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY TOUR

Starting and finishing in Queenstown, we travel inland to the Twizel and Mackenzie region, our base for the five days of this landscape photography workshop.

The Mackenzie District in late spring is a landscape photographer's paradise. From late November, the lupins come into full colour along the shores of Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki, and the wildflowers follow close behind — a riot of colour set against turquoise glacial lakes and the snow of the Southern Alps. Within a short drive we can photograph Aoraki / Mount Cook at first light, the Church of the Good Shepherd in the morning mist, the Clay Cliffs at golden hour, and quiet backcountry locations only locals know about. Few regions in New Zealand offer this much variety in such a compact area, and that variety is exactly what makes it so rewarding to photograph — whatever your style, there is something here for you.

A smaller group, and old-fashioned service

This tour is built around old-fashioned customer service. We cap the group at eight photographers, with two professional guides and a client-to-guide ratio of just four to one. That ratio is the whole point: it means genuine one-on-one guiding and tuition at every location, so you learn plenty and go home with photographs you're proud of.

Local knowledge you can't get from a map

I lived in this part of New Zealand and have guided hundreds of photography tour clients here, and the country is now in my soul. Over the years I've built strong local friendships and a deep working knowledge of the Mackenzie region that comes only from experience. — which locations hold the best compositions and light, when the lupins peak, and where to be standing when the weather turns in our favour. Photographing this landscape with clients and watching them capture jaw-dropping scenery for themselves is genuinely the best part of my year, and I look forward to showing you around.

Participant requirements -
Moderate hiking is involved, requiring decent fitness to navigate steep inclines, rocks, and uneven terrain on hikes over 2.5 km, including in low light, while carrying photography gear and keeping pace with the group. Photographers should understand their camera, including the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), and use back-button focus to meet the workshop’s creative demands and stay cohesive with others.
